I. I walk down the street.
There’s a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost…..I am helpless;
it isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.
II. I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place;
but it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.
III. I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in….it’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.
IV. I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
V. I walk down a different street.— Autobiography in Five Short Chapters

When you meet anyone you can find, sink your teeth, you’re in love for one night
Another day at work, wasting time doing anything that doesn’t require thought. The same repetitive process over and over again.
Hi, do you have an Air Miles card? That will be $16.54. Would you like a bag? Thank you, have a good day!
Another day being completely ignored by people so self-absorbed they don’t even understand what being polite means.
- Hi!
- Oh really? HE SAID THAT?!
- Do you have an Air Miles card?
- Oh my GOD I can’t believe it! What did you say?
- That will be $16.54.
- Does he know you cheated on him with his brother? *hands debit card*
- Thank you, have a good day!
- Oh I bet she’s a bigger whore than you ever were anyway!
Same old routine. Wake up at 5, shower, put on your best makeup, do your hair, put on decent clothes, eat breakfast, brush your teeth, catch the bus, hop on the subway, count your till, put on your best smile… I am barely human. I’ve become a robot. Mechanical reactions. I barely am anymore. I slowly forget what being someone ever felt like. Everyone is too caught up in their own little lies. They forget that they’re interacting with other human beings. We all slowly fade into the background.
I want to move to the one place where it’s appropriate to smile at strangers on the street. I want people to know my name. Marie-Eve, dammit, not the Jean-Coutu girl. I breathe, live, dream, fear, smile, cry. No one wants to turn into a robot. What is this place we live in? In the meantime, I’ll keep dreaming of this parallel universe where I serve a purpose.
